Additional Information
Common Dental Emergencies We Treat
A dental emergency can happen due to injury, infection, or lack of recent dental care. You can relax knowing that Van Wormer Family Dentistry can help!
-
Broken Tooth
If you’ve broken a piece off your tooth, don’t panic! If you can, place the broken piece of your tooth and place them in a clean, dry container (a plastic baggie works fine!).
Once you do that, gently rinse your mouth. If you notice any swelling, use a cold compress or ice pack against your jaw to help reduce swelling. Bring the broken tooth pieces to your emergency dentist appointment.
-
Knocked Out Tooth
If your tooth has been knocked out, recover it if possible and hold it gently by the crown (top of the tooth). Rinse it quickly and reinsert it into your mouth, holding it in place using clean gauze or cloth before you come to our office for your emergency dental appointment.
If you can’t recover the tooth, stopping the bleeding in your mouth is most important, so gently bite down on a clean square of gauze until the bleeding has stopped.
-
Pain & Swelling
If you’re experiencing consistent tooth pain and swelling, it’s a sign that you need to schedule a dental appointment. Ignoring constant oral pain can be dangerous and lead to more complicated dental procedures to treat and heal your teeth and gums.
If you’re experiencing swelling of your gum or face, apply a cold compress and use acetaminophen for temporary pain relief prior to your appointment with us.
-
Gum Abscess
An abscess on your gums is a serious infection that typically happens along your gumline where your teeth attach. If you ignore an abscess, the infection can spread to other areas of your body and affect the otherwise healthy gum tissue in your mouth.
